About GreyMan !
I grew up in two small towns in Victoria, Australia: Terang and Torquay. I was an active kid and did alright in athletics, squash, basketball and a bit of aussie rules football. My first taste of weight training was via a pair of house bricks and bodyweight exercises. But then I was hooked.
Out of High School (Geelong, Victoria, Australia), I went to university in Ballarat and studied Physical Education for 4 years (’82-’85). Then taught PhysEd for 4 years (Melbourne and Geelong). Then took a year off to travel, which turned into 4 years living OS. I travelled through India, Nepal, Greece, Turkey, and lived like a local in London for most of the next 4 years, working mainly in the fitness industry. By 1993, I was getting tired of counting to 10 for personal training clients and got work as a Physio Aide in Charing Cross Hospital. That opened doors for me at Sydney Uni, where I returned to study Physiotherapy for another bloody 4 years (’94-’97)
Bringing us to Now
I managed to then break the 4-year cycle and I’ve now been working for over 29 years as a Physiotherapist and Exercise Physiologist (as the PhysEd degree got me recognised early in the evolution of the discipline of Exercise Physiology). Over the past 19 years I’ve built an allied health business, growing from a one-man-show to a team of over 30 practitioners and admin staff at three locations around the Central Coast of New South Wales, Australia.
Lessons from the Dunning-Kruger Curve
I’ve learned a lot. I’ve UN-learned a lot of that. And I continue to learn and unlearn as new research and thinking emerges. I’m somewhere on the upward Slope of Enlightenment.
The Dunning-Kruger curve is a real thing: I’ve been to the top of Mount Stupid, and through the Valley of Despair, and I’d like to think I’ve moved waaaay beyond not knowing what I don’t know, to knowing how much I don’t know.
If you don’t know about the Dunning-Kruger Effect, you should. You’ll quickly realise that the confidence you hear on social media is often coming from those at the top of Mount Stupid.
Meet our Men’s Health Physiotherapist
I have a lot in common with the above-mentioned tosser, and yet I’m different – oh, so very different.
Oh, and if the anatomical image has you freaked out, it could be because you've got something going on down there. So let's talk. Men's biz is waaaay too often neglected. And it shouldn't be!
For starters
I help men understand their bodies better—cutting the jargon, easing the awkward, and keeping it real so you can understand what's going on, and what you can do about it.
I gained my Physiotherapy degree in the UK
...a world away in space and time - and at that time I never thought I'd end up specialising in MH. I actually have a strong background in musculoskeletal physio.
Coming to Australia
I came to Oz in 1995 with my wife and we ended up settling in Sydney's Northern Beaches, where we've raised 4 kids. Along the way I worked with the Grey Man for about 6 years!
My interest in Men’s Health
...came about because there was a glaring gap in the area. The pelvic floor was becoming more appreciated in Physio, but it was all centred on female pelvic function - not men's issues!
So I moved into specialisation
...to help fill that gap. Real Time Ultrasound (RTU) was a new 'thing' and I basically made it my own. I'm proud to say I have been highly involved in research and teaching physios how to assist men's unique challenges...
How I hope to be of assistance
I help men understand problems like prostate cancer and the associated surgery, sexual dysfunction, continence. I can help you deal with stuff that can be frightening and depressing, but is usually manageable!
Dietitian for Men
Our GMG Dietitian is an experienced clinician and an active bloke, having completed at least one ironman event and having built a large practice employing 6 other dietitians. He has worked with everyone from elite athletes to everday plonkers like most of us! He understands the web is a wonderful source of great info while also being a minefield of misinformation! His job is cut through the crap and help you to help yourself - whether that’s improving energy, managing weight, enhancing performance, or simply feeling your best.
With a focus on balanced, evidence-based eating, our dietitian guides you toward healthier habits that fit your lifestyle. Through expert advice, practical tools, and ongoing support, we help you make food choices that nourish both your body and mind—so you can thrive every day, not just survive.
Qualifications
- B.Ex.Sp.Sci
- M.Clin.Ex.Phys
- AEP
Exercise Physiologist
Exercise Physiologist. Like most EPs, this bloke understands how the body adapts to physical activity and works with people - both healthy and not - to improve from where they are at. What makes THIS guy different is that he literally (and has there ever been a more appropriate use of the word) written the book on the intersection of Stretching and Strengthening. HIs clients include a multitude of elite athletes and plenty of everyday plonkers like the rest of us! He is a rockstar (or at least was a rockstar - yes, really), he's incredibly funny, he has had his knocks and definitely lives the ethos of the Grey Man - having a crack and not giving up.

Psychologist
For someone whose gig it is to peer inside heads or assist when the emotional going gets tough, I actually have a more than solid grounding in ‘the physical'. Prior to and during my training in Psychology, I was heavily involved in the fitness industry. I have developed gyms from scratch, managed large fitness facilities and the teams that run them, participated in Powerlifting, created vlogs, collaborated with influencers, done online coaching - and basically walked the walk. As a psychologist I help a wide range of people with lots of different challenges. Relationships with people, with substances, with life and loss - and relationships with themselves and their bodies. The meeting of body and mind is an interesting space, full of promise (because we all know it's generally good for you, right?) but not without it's risks - too much of a good thing isn't always a better thing.
